0.2 DIOR WOMEN IN THE GAME X MONTAGUE EDE

Corporate suiting has long shaped how and by whom power is worn, sharpening the body underneath to match the patriarchal structures it moves through. Women’s tailoring too often echoes these codes – contouring the female body not to defy these hierarchies, but to accommodate them. It’s exactly this sticky tension between gendered silhouette and power that sits at the heart of London-based designer Annabel Ballance’s recent project.

Supported by the British Fashion Council and Dior Men, Ballance has collaborated with stylist Karen Binns and tailor Antonia Ede of Montague Ede to craft a custom suit for Lucy Beeden, design director of Kim Jones Studio, reimagining both the process and the form of the storied silhouette.

0.4 HÄN ARCHIVE SAFE RISK

SAFE RISK is a collaborative project with artist and writer Francis Whorrall-Campbell, combining personal writing and clothing design to explore fashion as a tool for identity, protection and self-expression.

Francis and Annabel grew up in the same small city in the North of England, but only met after both relocating to London. The project brings together Francis’s dreamlike, introspective writing with Annabel’s designs, creating a dialogue between text and garment.

The writing reflects on fashion as a means of accessing and articulating gender transition. In small-town England, high fashion and queerness can feel like distant fantasies; ways of being imagined as belonging ‘elsewhere’. SAFE RISK considers how clothing can instead provide security: a framework through which the wearer can exist, move and be seen in any environment.

0.5 THE HAT STAND COLLABORATION WITH EDWARD OLIVER

The Hat Stand is conceived through a systems-focused approach, grounded in the idea that a person’s first interaction with an object shapes how they value and live with it. Rather than being an afterthought, the stand is designed as a considered point of arrival in the domestic space.

Developed in collaboration with sculptor Edward Oliver (@edwaoliver), the piece bridges functional design and sculptural form. The collaboration’s sensitivity to balance, proportion and material elevates the wooden structure beyond utility, giving it presence while retaining simplicity.

Often overlooked as non-essential, the hat stand quietly proves its worth. It becomes both practical and architectural: a subtle anchor in a room that supports everyday life while standing confidently as an object in its own right.

SELECTED PROJECTS AND COLLABORATIONS

LÅPSLEY: A GUILTY HEART CAN NEVER REST

For the London preview of Låpsley’s EP, A Guilty Heart Can Never Rest, Annabel Ballance assisted in the conceptualisation and realisation of an immersive exhibition space. The project focused on translating the EP’s atmospheric themes into a physical landscape, introducing audiences to the visual identity of the record. Her contribution centred on the curation of garments designed to highlight motion, ensuring the installation served as a dynamic backdrop for an exclusive live performance that bridged the gap between fashion and sound.

BFC / VOGUE DESIGNER FASHION FUND

In a showcase hosted at 180 Strand, Annabel had the distinct honour of presenting her work to His Majesty King Charles III as part of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. This presentation offered a deep dive into the technical and creative lifecycle of her Master’s collection. By exhibiting both finished garments and the iterative process behind them, she articulated a vision for modern design that balances rigorous craftsmanship with contemporary innovation for one of the industry's most prestigious platforms.

RCA BATTERSEA SHOW: REIMAGINING MENSWEAR

Annabel’s work at the Royal College of Art (RCA) centred on an exploration of the boundary between the body and its environment. By merging the principles of sculpture with the functionality of clothing, she developed a collection that utilises innovative materials and experimental structures to challenge traditional wardrobe norms. This body of work seeks to redefine menswear, transforming garments into structural interventions that deepen the physical and emotional connection between the wearer, the clothing, and the surrounding space.
